I was out digging through some crates yesterday, had (have) a cold and a fever but I couldn’t stay cooped up at home, had to go out and do something. I picked up 10 vinyls, 4 which are in the photo above. We have some US psychedelia, French chanson, Russian trad jazz (with crazy synths in a couple of the tunes!), UK fusion and of course the soundtrack to Carl Sagan’s excellent tv series Cosmos; plus a couple others. I did have to go through 25-30 crates to find these ones tho, it was pretty picked through already, but all in all a pretty decent dig in the end.
Why did I do the list? Well there was a post on facebook about the prices on certain “old” hiphop releases and I thought I’d just check mine to see if anything was worth anything.
Anyways…
This was based on the median of the last 10 sales on Discogs. If I took the ones that has gone for the highest price (but with a lower median) the list would look a little different.
Also, this is just based on the vinyls I’ve added there so far, so there might be some more surprises down the line. I was surprised that a couple in my collection didn’t make the list, but hey, that just shows you what I know… Although the biggest surprise so far was the Sherlock LP & 12” I have to say, I had no idea they were worth that kind of money, being Swedish hiphop and all…
Got a new record player the other day, a 1960s (I’m guessing as I can’t find any info at all on it) portable Dux 2523; adding on to the lo-fi goodness!
Yup you read it right.. Italo Disco Week. I kicked it off yesterday over at my vinyl tumblr and I’ll continue to post a couple of 12”s every day all week. So if you’re in the mood for some happy-/cheesy-/weird-/so-bad-it’s-good-/or just plain good/bad- italo grooves, head over and check it out.
Just ordered a couple of records. Big up to artists/labels that still put shit out on vinyl (like The Left’s Gas Mask on Mello Music Group; which incidentally was one of the albums I got). I’ve bought a few CD’s just to support, but I can count the number I still own on my fingers, not really interested in ‘em. Digital? Well sure, I buy it. Not feeling it either though.
Put your shit out on vinyl and I’ll buy it in a heartbeat. And that’s all I have to say about that.
I made another tumbler page (if you’ve checked the sidebar here you might have spotted the rss feed trickling in) called Owl’s Dusty Vinyl. It’s basically just me posting album covers from my vinyl collection along with a video or two when available.
Thought it was about time I made another album recommendation, here we go…
SoundscisDig For Victory
Peep the tune The Remedy..
I ordered it a while back but hadn’t gotten round to listening to it properly until yesterday, and man, it rocks. True school hip-hop (or whatever you wanna call it) galore. I highly recommend that y’all grab this gem on vinyl before it’s sold out. You’ll still be able to grab the digital release if it is tho.. but vinyl is vinyl. You can preview all the tracks over at their bandcamp page.
Buy the Digital Release here or the CD & Vinyl here.
Here’s an excerpt from the release notes…
Soundsci is the brainchild of Jonny Cuba (One half of now disbanded Dynamic Syncopation) and Audessey (Founding member of Mass Influence) after collaborating previously on numerous occasions for Ninja Tune (Ground Zero, Dedicated, Systematic and 2 Tha Left), they kept in touch and continued making music together. As more tracks were recorded and friends Ollie Teeba (Herbaliser), U-George, and Therapy got brought into the mix it made sense to make an ep rather than single and the “Dig For Victory EP” was born. As a bonus track we are honoured to include an older track produced by Audessey featuring Jax from Binkis who unfortunately passed away last year and Reality. Using their b-boy ethics while not getting caught up in the past it thumps hard and reminds you why you love hip-hop.
The EP is limited to 275 hand numbered red vinyl ep’s and 10 test pressings on black vinyl with individual artwork never to be repressed. The first 100 standard copies come with a CD of all the tracks and bonus folder with instrumentals, acapellas and remix competition.
