magOwl – Page One

Update: The free downloads on bandcamp has run out, more will be available in a couple of weeks. Nothing I can do about it. So if you want any of the albums on there you’ll have to spend a few quid.

So December 21st has arrived and as promised here’s Page One, my latest collection of beats and oddities.

You can grab it for free over at magowl.bandcamp.com.

This is a selection of beats from the last year, year and a half, or so. Some are entries from the LouisDen beatbattles (www.louisden.com), so if you’re keeping tabs you might have heard a few. But on the other hand there are others on here that should be new to any and all.

The lot was produced by me, magOwl, using Renoise (www.renoise.com) aided by the old Ensoinq EPS 16+, the Boss SP-303 and a healthy amount of vinyl.

Go get it, listen, enjoy, tell a friend!

Renoise 2.6

Main new features in Renoise 2.6 are:

  • Scripting: create powerful new Renoise features with Lua scripting
  • Truly customizable bidirectional MIDI controller + OSC support with Duplex, thanks to scripting
  • Sample Autoseeking, which will make large samples behave behave more like a traditional audio channel
  • 64bit port for Linux
  • DSSI support for Linux
  • … and more

Check it out here!

Lua scripting, introduced as part of the beta cycle in July, has already resulted in a plethora of new tools, as well as native support for the following hardware: AlphaTrack, BCF-2000, BCR-2000, KONTROL49, FaderPort, microKONTROL, nanoKONTROL, Launchpad, Remote SL-MKII, Nocturn, Monome, Ohm64, iPad via TouchOSC… All created by the Renoise community on their own dime, just for the fun of it.

Renoise OHC’s

Here’s two slightly fixed up Renoise IRC chat OHC (One Hour Competition) tunes, both still very much not done, or mixed properly. First one is some form of breakbeat thing from the 2nd of March this year and the next is a swingy, dirty beat from the other night.

So what is an OHC, the name gives a way part of it, i.e. that you have an hour to make your tune. The other part is that you’re not allowed to use any VST(i)’s or any other sounds then the ones provided in a sample pack made for that specific OHC (and there’s usually not a whole heap of sounds & drums to choose from). So you have to be a little bit creative with what you have to work with, although not too creative; you only  have one hour to complete the tune. Then everybody listens to the entries together (all tunes are anonymous). After hearing all the tunes there’s a vote.. usually top 3 or 5, and a winner is crowned. What do you win you ask.. nothing but the admiration of your peers, but it’s not really about winning, it’s about having fun and pushing yourself. So if you own Renoise and wanna participate, head over to www.renoise.com and find the chat link (main page –> community –> chat).

Hope to see you there!

Remixta

DJ Suva played two of my tracks last night on Remixta, both off The Sowl Files, and I was in good company I have to say… some killer tracks in the playlist. So y’all should check it out over at the site, here’s a direct link to the latest episode. Remixta is a podcast playing tracks made in the lovely music application Renoise, keep reading for some more info.

Here’s the about blurb off of there (which I shamelessly copied :)

Remixta is a monthly music podcast run by estonian DJ Suva and dedicated to playing music made with Renoise tracker. During the month, I collect all the new Renoise music from Renoise Forums, SoundCloud, Myspace and the tracks people send me directly. I choose the tracks I like the best and play them in 40 minute to 1h DJ set Live over IceCast. Everyone can tune in and listen the live show, and if they miss it, they can always relisten the podcast form of the show.

Mucking about with ReWire

Started messing around with ReWire today, man I love it, big up to the Renoise devs for implementing it. Now I can use both of my fav music applications at the same time. Which are, in case someone hasn’t been paying attention, Cubase and Renoise.

Recorded a short vid of my first attempt.. the result of it at least, a quick beat mock-up. I didn’t think about recording until I had had already made the beat and merged all the cuts and whatnot, so it doesn’t look like much… But hey! ReWire!!!!

Using AHK With Renoise

Yesterday I talked about how you could use AutoHotkey to improve and speedup your computer use in general, but today I thought I’d show how it can be useful for making/playing music. Something more in line with what I usually write about. It’s nothing fancy and quite basic, I re-bound the Channel Mute keys in Renoise, which are Control + 0-9 on the keypad as default. What I did was remove the need to hold down the Control key so I could just hit the numbers on the keypad, ahk and renoiseand I bound several channel mutes together so I could press say 7 on the keypad and mute all hi-hats in one go.

Check the pic for a full view of the script including some notes (or grab it here, just open it in notepad), it’s a very simple AHK script that use the built in command SendInput to send key presses to the active window.

Also you can check the video (HD version on Vimeo as usual) where I try to use my brand new key-bindings, try is the keyword here lol. I didn’t practice any so I’m not exactly tight. The tune is just some lofi, glitchy thing I threw together. This specific script will only work with this songs layout, so you’ll have to make one for each song, unless you use the same layout on all your songs.

Tutorials and Music Players

New site updates/features… first off I made a Tutorial page, I thought it’d be a nice thing to gather those I do in one place. There’s only two at the moment, but once I make a new one I’ll put it there as well. I usually make them on request, so if you’re wondering about something in particular regarding Cubase, Renoise,Wavelab, some VST/VSTi, or maybe even Photoshop, drop me a line. If I can help you and I have the time, I will.

Second thing.. A music player, J from Bluevibe reminded me about Soundcloud yesterday on twitter. I had totally forgot about it even though I signed up during it’s beta phase. So today I promptly uploaded some tracks, both on the Kvartersakuten account and the magOwl one. I will try to fit in at least one player here, just need to find some good spot for it, but for now I’ll just include one in this post.

Cutting Vocals in Renoise

(HD version on Vimeo as usual)

Just a quick vid showing Beatslaughers suggestion on how to cut long samples/vocals in Renoise so you dont have to scroll all the way back to the top again to trigger it.
You will however need to line the sample up in its proper bpm first, I might do another little vid showing some basic timestretching and cutting using Cubase later on.
