2 Weeks 3 Hours: Day 05 – Whirlwind

whirlwind

Day 5, took a little longer to get this one up because I made a video as well. Perhaps I didn’t choose the best tune to make a video for, since this was fairly simple, the glitch one yesterday or the off-beat one the day before that would’ve been better I think. But I might do another one later on.

Soul samples, pretty straight forward for once, cut out a bunch of loops, some eq cut-offs filtering out a base from the sample, took a couple of brass stabs from two other loops and voila. Not much drums on this, but I didn’t feel it was that necessary, two kicks, two hats, one snare & a partial drum loop. This one needs some breaks, because it gets kinda monotonous, a better chorus would be beneficial as well.

Pic is a mash-up of some of vintage shots, a couple street pics and an old graff sketch of mine.

HD version of the video is on Vimeo (link) so if you wanna see what is actually going on I suggest you watch it there. And it’s not very interesting, unless maybe you are a producer and wanna see what I do.

2 Weeks 3 Hours: Day 04 – Glitch Train

glitch train

Day 4 got a glitch-over. Word of advice though, don’t try to do a glitch type tune in 3 hours, forgot how fiddly it is, this one def needs some editing/eqing once all is over.

Drum loop cut up, mixed and glitched. Two rhodes on there, one of em live throughout the entire song, I’m no McGriff tho, so it’s not very advanced hehe. Slight glitch on those as well. A variety of odd samples, both long and short makes for the base of the tune, all of it glitched up in various ways and played on, not just looped. Sine bass again.. that’s about it i think.

The pic is an old one, I was gonna go out and take some new shots today, but I got a mail about another tune that needs to get done, so I had to stay in and work on that. I was into the whole abstract/surreal photo thing a couple of years ago and this one is from that period.

2 Weeks 3 Hours: Day 03 – Get Up

get up

Troublesome day today (and we only on day three heh). I started one tune but quickly realized it wasn’t gonna happen… on any level, so I threw something else together quick fast. Today we went for the disco samples and off beat mayhem, another remix. Not as many drums as usual, but it came out ok anyway I think.. I’m not 100% happy with the bass line, like two different notes or something, I wanted to do a little more at least. Main bass is a sine sub, plus there’s bits of a sampled bass in there as well, embedded within some of the lower computer sounds. The melody is me playing on a couple of samples, some samples a bit longer some just one note.

As for the pic I was gonna do some graff thing because the tune is called Get Up and I of course instantly connected it with the old-skool-must-read-graff-book called Getting Up by Craig Castleman, if you haven’t read it, go get it right away, it’s very good. Ok, back to the pic.. obviously I didn’t do a graff thing, I went for a photo instead. It’s actually a photo I took a few years back that most folks don’t think is anything special, I on the other hand think it’s one of my best shots.. don’t ask me why, I have no idea. And for some strange reason I thought it fit.

2 Weeks 3 Hours: Day 02 – New Money

new money

Two down twelve to go!

Juggaknots “New Money” got worked over. Some badly sampled (on purpose) jazz-funk made the base for this, cut-blend-paste, some fender, a moog bass played hi made a decent little synth, throw in some automation, 10 channels worth of drums and this is what came out. I wish I had a little more time to fix up the drums a bit better and maybe figure out something more interesting for the chorus, but my 3h is up. I’ll most likely fix it when making the rounds once all is done. Alligators, Old Mink & New Money.. too good lol. Another google collage today, I’ll get on some photos in the coming days.

2 Weeks 3 Hours: Day 01 – The Cause

the cause

First tune and pic all done.  Jazz samples, a little glitch, a couple of blips, bass and lots of drums as usual. It got a bit static, but it’s the first one out so that’s cool. Google collage. Recipe.. type words into google image search, “the cause” for instance, save some images, fire up photoshop, blend, erase, draw. All done.

2 Weeks 3 Hours: About

Ok, so what’s this 2 Weeks 3 Hours all about?
I’ll tell you. It’s about creativity, it’s about about getting things done, it’s about emotion, consistency, abstract paintings and time & space. It’s about trying to do something creative, interesting and worth wile. Here’s two points about what all that really means…

  • I like Albums, evocative, evolving, emotional. A good tune is fine, but nothing beats a good solid album, an album should take you for a ride. An album should not contain 14 hit/chart songs imho, that’s what Best Of Albums are for.. I’m old-fashioned like that.
  • I used to paint abstract paintings and I like abstract paintings. To me an abstract painting is emotion, and when you start painting an abstract image, at least when I did, you sort of capture the emotional state your currently in, not everyone will perceive it, but it is about what it means to you. So what I’m getting at is, by limiting my time and making one tune a day, I hope to get some sort of emotional snapshot of these two weeks. A 14 days x 3 hours sized abstract painting of magOwl in audio form if you will, complete with accompanying pictures.

How:
I will have 3 hours every day for 2 weeks to make a new song, it can be a remix, an instrumental, hip-hop, jungle, everything goes. On top of that I’ll make a picture for it, photo/collage/painting/whatever. After the tune and pic is done I’ll post it here for everyone to hear and see.. no censure, I’ll put it up even if I don’t like it.
After all is done I will go through the lot and fix any things I really feel needs fixing. Once I’m happy with the tunes and pics after that I’ll make a cover, put em all together, and hopefully they’ll all fit together as a whole, that’s the idea anyways. We’ll know in a couple of weeks.

Why:
Personally I’ve been slacking off a bit lately, so one reason for doing this is to jump-start myself back on track. Another one is to see if I can actually make something coherent and consistent with limited resources and time, call me a masochist lol. I wanna see if I can pull it off, without making any complete duds.
And why add pictures on top of that?
Well.. I’ve done photo jobs off and on, graphic design on occasion, painted a lot, and I hardly do any of that any more.. I miss it. So I thought this was as good a project as any to get my ass on those things as well. Plus I don’t think that you have to be an EAM musician collaborating with either a modern ballet company or a quasi-performance artist to bridge the gap between art-forms. I’m not saying I’ll make fine-art here, or everyday things for that matter, what will come out will come out.

See you on the other side.
