2 Weeks 3 Hours: Epilogue

2 Weeks 3 Hours

Ok, so how did I do? Did I manage to meet my criteria and expectations. Did I fall short? Any duds, heat or was it plain blah. These are just my own personal thoughts on the project, and as such, not exactly objective.

The Rules:

Did I do a track a day for two weeks? No I didn’t. I had a couple of days off during the process, for a couple of different reasons, so in that regard I guess I failed. But I think the fact that I got it done in the end, even if it took a couple of extra days, is what’s important.
And I only used three hours to make each tune.. really. I know there’s now way I can prove that, so, you know… you’ll just have to take my word for it.

The Pictures:

Well I have to say I fell off a bit with the pictures. My idea was to actually go out and take some spanking new photos, which I clearly didn’t. I think maybe it all got to be a bit too much, I mean your brain’s kinda mushy after cramming out a tune in three hours, and to re-invigorate your artistic self after that, go out and take at least one good picture, get back in and fix it all up… So I took the easy way out.

Quick rant…
I know it’s all about taking pictures of everything and publishing every photo on the net somewhere now-days, say flickr for instance. But I’ve never ever understood that practice, and for the record I never ever will. What is the point of putting up every damn photo you take of something? As a photographer you take say 10-20 rolls of film (to use a non digital analogy) on a shoot, and from all of those pictures you might choose 1 to 5 pictures that you actually want to show other people. Seriously.. no one is interested in looking at 700+ pictures of the same thing. If you can’t pick out the ones you think are good from a set, please don’t upload anything, we have enough visual pollution. EOD.

The Songs:

The quality of the songs, which is a highly subjective matter, is pretty decent in my opinion. Sure there are a couple that aren’t all that and can’t be ranked among my better work, but they are still ok and not complete duds. I really don’t feel there are any total failures regarding the beats. The ones I feel the least has to be Whirlwind and The Return, mainly because they are way too simple, they feel like an intro that never really kicks off. There are more that could benefit from some expanding, but I think the majority work as is.
Favs have to be World, Pineapple and Full Circle with Poppa Laser, Glitch Train and maybe My Heart (which sort of grew on me) or King Me, close seconds. And I gotta say I love the drums and bass on Good Tymz.

Conclusion:

If it’s an accurate picture of my emotional state over these two weeks, I really couldn’t say. The tunes surely varies in style, tempo and execution, but I think I need more distance to draw any conclusions about it. Give me a year or so, then I can look back with a little more clarity and objectivity.
It did however get my beatmaking tempo increased, I’ve been steady at it ever since I finished this up. Even if it did backfire slightly the week just after, but I kinda expected that.

So in conclusion, I think I managed to pull it off fairly well, a couple of bumps and some things that didn’t work out as planned, but overall I’ll give myself a pass. What do y’all think?

Send me a PM if you wanna peep the Remixes.

2 Weeks 3 Hours: Day 14 – Full Circle

full circle

Day 14.. All done!

I actually did this yesterday and forgot to put it up. Some on-beat/off-beat thing, psych/prog samples again.. I just can’t stay away. 2 kicks, 2 snares, 4 hats, sine bass and a nice verse by Ide.

So, what now? Well.. I’ll take a week or so to iron out any kinks and such and listen through it properly to see if it fits together or not. After that I’ll make an unofficial remixtape for friends and family, maybe a limited download.. we’ll see. Plus a beat tape which will go out to a select few, and of course the full instrumentals to those that asked and that I trust hehe. I’ll make another post telling you what I think.. Did I hit or miss? Any duds? Which do I like? Did I manage to do what I set out to do? That type of deal. So expect that in a week or so. And the final tune…

2 Weeks 3 Hours: Day 13 – The Return

the return

Day 13.. almost there!

I went for some psych-folk today again, I was gonna take another route but I couldn’t find anything interesting, interesting enough at least. Pretty straight forward sampling, but maybe not as straight forward as it appears. I spent most of the time mucking about with the drums, it got 5 snares, 2 kicks, 3 hats, 2 shakers, parts from 4 different drum loops & a crash, plus the obligatory sine bass. I tried to get some strings and/or synths on there as well, but I couldn’t find anything that I thought fit before my time was up. And it needs some breaks, as it is now it just soldiers on in the same fashion throughout. Final day tomorrow!

2 Weeks 3 Hours: Day 12 – Pineapple

pineapple

Day 12, reggae vibes and one of the stiffest vocal verses I’ve ever heard lol, had to swing it up a little by putting it offbeat.

Reggae, dub to be precise, samples as I said, lots of drums & drum loop snippets, lots of automation driving delays, flangers & reverbs. I’m not entirely sure how it sounds, I get the feeling it sounds a bit thin when listening in the headphones, but switching to speakers it sounds alright… so I dunno, I’ll have to get back to you on that. I know I’ll need to check some of the automation later on at least, because I can hear a couple of things that doesn’t sound 100%. Pic is a re-edit of an old t-shirt print of mine.. grunged it up a little and added some more color. So who did put pineapple juice in my pineapple juice?

2 Weeks 3 Hours: Day 11 – Howlin’

howlin

Day 11.. yeah I know, I took a couple of days off hehe, but I needed it. Not that it helped much tho, total brain-freeze today, but at least I got something done.

Howlin’ Wolf tells us what’s what concerning The Blues. I went after the free/experimental-jazz of the late 70s today, currently one of my favorite genres. And I found some really nice samples, but I couldn’t execute properly imho. It’s nothing wrong with the beat as such, I just feel I could have done much more with it. The usual setup of drums, 8 channels I think, sine bass, cut-up samples and of course Mr. Howlin Wolf talking. I had some strings on there but I decided they needed to go, didn’t feel right. I’ll do better tomorrow! :)

2 Weeks 3 Hours: Day 10 – World

world

Day 10, extremely tired today as well, maybe I’m coming down with something.

I like how this one came out, even if I sorta ran out of ideas two thirds in… Soul-Jazz samples chopped and rearranged, disted sine bass, a couple of gated synths, 3 kicks, 2 snares, 4 or 5 hats and a couple of chopped up drum loops. Not much more to say.. I like it! :) It’s the Exotic Music From Sweden and the Far North!

2 Weeks 3 Hours: Day 09 – My Heart

my heart

Day 9 out of the way, sorry.. but I was tired today :)

Weird lengths on the verse vocals, so the transitions when they end isn’t very good, but I’ll save fixing it till later. And about the accas.. One, I like working with an accapella when making a beat. Two, it sounds alot nicer then throwing on some obnoxious voice-over. Three, well.. there isn’t one at the moment hehe. Back to the beat.. got on some psych samples today, played some sub-bass, a creepy crawly pulse bass, hi and low, a hi saw synth, seven or eight channels of drums and a couple of fx-channels (not counting any buses).

Pic.. yup that’s me all photoshopped up and ready for the fashion mags :P

2 Weeks 3 Hours: Day 08 – Good Tymz

good tymz

Day 8.. UK folk meets the glitch meeting the off-beat.

Very happy with how this one came out, chorus might need a little extra touch, but other then that I got no complaints. Two kicks, two snares, 4 hats, deep sine bass, some folky guitar samples and some blips, all glitched/lo-fied/off-beated (making up words again) up. Fit Big Daddy K better then I first thought. Don’t know what to say.. bouncy, dirty, hard, with some melody. Elevator photography!

2 Weeks 3 Hours: Day 07 – King Me

king me

Day 7, some smooth ish. Strings, trumpet, big bag of drums, triangle bass and some keys. I don’t know what to say about it really, first one so far during this project that I feel is really really done. I could maybe throw on a crash when the chorus hits, that’s about all I cant think of right now. Well, I could add some additional bass hits during the chorus and perhaps every other bar or so and mix up the drums on occation, but I’m not sure it’s really necessary.

Pic is an old painting of mine, one of the few I have left.

2 Weeks 3 Hours: Day 06 – Poppa Laser

poppa laser

Day 6… on day 7… slight miscalculation there lol. Friend called me yesterday and asked if I could come help out at his work, so of course I did. But because of that, no tune yesterday.

I wanted to do something different today, once you press play you’ll know. Bunch of drums again.. yay! Two basses, a couple of synths & some samples. And I know doing the Poppa Large is a bit risky, but I couldnt find any accapella in the right speed besides that one, so it was out of necessity rather then me actually wanting to do it.

There seems to be some timing issue with the kick on verse one, it doesn’t sound like that in Renoise, I can’t figure it out atm. And the transitions to one or two of the choruses needs to be fixed plus maybe throw in the usual break or two. Besides that I’m quite happy with this one.
